Lü’s background helps explain why the idea felt personal rather than theoretical. Later interviews described him as a 29-year-old product professional from Zhengzhou who had worked in cities including Shenzhen and Hangzhou. During his years living and working away from home, he experienced the quiet insecurity familiar to many solo residents: if an accident happened behind a locked apartment door, how long would it take before anyone noticed? His father had worked in safety management in the oil industry, so warnings about how a single overlooked risk could affect an entire family were part of his upbringing.

The team’s answer was almost aggressively simple. A user selected an emergency contact and tapped a large check-in button at regular intervals. When check-ins were missed for consecutive days, the system sent an alert asking the contact to verify the user’s safety. There was no complicated social feed, no endless health dashboard, and no attempt to turn ordinary life into a game. According to reporting on the project, the three-person team collaborated remotely in their spare time, spent roughly 1,000 to 1,500 yuan, and completed the early product in about a month.

That simplicity is the part I admire most. Many founders assume innovation must involve more features, more data, and more artificial intelligence. Demumu moved in the opposite direction. It reduced a serious question—“Would anybody know if I were in trouble?”—to one repeatable action. The app did not solve loneliness, but it converted an abstract fear into a practical routine. In product design, removing unnecessary steps can be harder than adding impressive-looking functions.

The original Chinese name also played a major role in its success. “Are You Dead?” sounded rude, funny, and unsettling at the same time. It resembled the name of the food-delivery platform Ele.me, giving the product the rhythm of an internet joke while pointing directly at the anxiety beneath it. When the team pursued international expansion, it adopted the name Demumu. Founder Guo explained that “De” referred to death, while “mumu” was intended to soften the mood with a cute, friendly sound. The result was more globally usable, although some early supporters thought the rebrand weakened the original name’s sharpness.

In January 2026, the app suddenly climbed China’s paid-download rankings and drew international media coverage. Reports described it as a response to the growing number of people living alone, particularly young workers and students far from their families. Its popularity arrived so quickly that the founders faced investor attention, copycat products, public arguments over the name, and questions about privacy and regulation almost at once. The app was later removed from the mainland Chinese App Store, while the team continued discussing new versions and broader safety services.

This rapid rise exposed both the strength and weakness of the creators’ approach. Demumu was easy to understand in seconds, which made it naturally shareable. However, a missed tap does not always indicate danger. A dead battery, forgotten notification, travel schedule, or lost phone could create a false alarm. An email alert may also be too slow for a genuine emergency. In my view, the best future version would preserve the one-button experience while adding carefully designed options such as multiple contacts, customizable check-in periods, escalation by text or phone, and transparent privacy controls.

What makes Lü Gongchen’s story memorable is that he did not begin with a fashionable technology and search for a problem. He began with a human worry and chose the cheapest technology capable of addressing it. After the original app’s turbulent viral period, later reports said he established a new company in Hangzhou and began developing a broader safety project known in Chinese as “Zaimo Zaimo,” moving from a single check-in tool toward a network connecting solo residents, families, and older adults.

Demumu may ultimately be remembered less as a perfect safety system than as a brilliantly timed question. Its creator and his partners recognized that independence does not eliminate the need to be noticed. Sometimes the most powerful digital product is not the one that promises to transform life. It is the one that quietly asks whether you are still there—and makes sure someone cares about the answer.
